Distribution of the species

It has been recorded near the peaks of Mount Paggaio, at altitudes above 1,700 m asl., in subalpine grasslands. This means that the area in which the species is distributed is rather restricted.

Description of the species (biological and ecological features)

It can form large colonies locally, therefore the total size of its population on Mt. Paggaio is relatively large. Perennial, herbaceous plant, up to 50 cm tall, slightly woody at its base. The leaves are compound, consisting of a medium number of small leaflets (5-8 pairs), from elliptical or oval to oblong. Its inflorescence is dense, 1-3 cm long, with numerous flowers. The flowers are pink with darker colored nerves. The small fruit (up to 7 mm) resembles a bean (legume). Several species of the genus Onobrychis contain chemical compounds that have a medicinal effect. Some species, including Onobrychis montana susbp. scardica contain the chemical compound rutin, which is known for its antioxidant and anticoagulant properties, and is also used to prevent diabetes. In Greece, the species is valuable for apiculture, as it is one of those visited by bees for their nutrition. It is a significant forage plant, as stated by the name of the genus (όνος + βρύκω), which means that it is being eaten greedily by donkeys (onos in Greek). It is a Balkan endemic that prefers dry and rich in grasses places, in the subalpine and alpine zone. It is found at altitudes from 1,600 to 2,200 m asl., occurring in a variety of geological substrates but more often on limestone. It flowers during the summer, specifically from the end of June until the middle of August.

Although the species has a restricted geographical distribution on Mt. Paggaio, no negative impact has been observed.
