About us

The virtual museum for biodiversity was created in connection with the implementation of the MOBILE BIODIVERSITY project.

Cross-border cooperation is essential for the future of biodiversity in the municipalities of Kresna and Pagayo, and the project demonstrates it by creating opportunities for cooperation, exchange of know-how and best practices. Project activities include: biodiversity assessment, development of a joint biodiversity database, development of innovative training tools and facilities and awareness raising on biodiversity in the cooperation area.

Promoting awareness of biodiversity

The Mobile Biodiversity project meets the main cross-border challenge of protecting biodiversity. Although the environment is one of the most valuable assets, its potential is underused. The scope of the program reveals high levels of vulnerability to climate change compared to EU 28, Greek and Bulgarian national levels. Combined cross-border adaptive capacity is among the lowest in Europe. The range shows a significant degree of ecological connectivity and accordingly faces similar challenges such as – reduction of nesting sites, deforestation, forest fires and others. The main challenges identified include transboundary coordination in mapping, assessment and study of common ecosystems, the implementation of a common habitat conservation policy, and the promotion of biodiversity awareness.

Improved biodiversity management

The project approach envisages territorially integrated actions for improved biodiversity management at the cross-border level in accordance with the specific objectives of the INTERREG V-AΕ Cross-Border Cooperation Program: GREECE – BULGARIA 2014-2020. The planned actions, which define an innovative approach for presenting specific and scientific information through attractive ICT solutions for the protection of distinctive habitats and promoting awareness of biodiversity, are aimed at the identified needs of the municipalities of Kresna and Paggaio within the cross-border region.
