Distribution of the species

Scattered on Mt. Paggaio, with almost all its recording sites located in the subalpine grasslands of the mountain, mainly in rocky sites.

Description of the species (biological and ecological features)

Its population on Mt. Paggaio is not very large. A species of wild rose that decorates some mountains of Macedonia and Epirus. It is a plant that reaches a height of up to 1 m with leaflets generally small in size, wide elliptical to obovate or almost rounded, often with glandular hairs on both surfaces or only at the lower one. It is characterized by the impressive, large flowers (up to 4-5 cm in diameter), which usually grow one by one, with creamy white petals or almost yellowish in dry conditions, while the sepals of the flowers are whole. The fruit is almost spherical, blackish or blackish-violet at maturity. In foreign countries it is widely used as an ornamental. In Greece it is found in dry, stony places, stony grasslands, well-lit broadleaved forests or mixed forests, usually at altitudes of 1,000-1,500 m asl. Sometimes we can find it up to 2,000 m asl. It flowers in May and June.

No specific threat for this species was recorded so far, which is mainly due to the inaccessible areas and stony places to which it occurs. No actions are expected which could easily lead to a significant reduction in its population.
