Distribution of the species

It has been recorded above 1,400 m asl. in the wider area of the peaks of Mt. Paggaio. Although it does not form large populations, it is found in a large number of sites with favorable conditions.

Description of the species (biological and ecological features)

Perennial, herbaceous plant, with small stems (up to 15 cm) and numerous, very narrow leaves at their base, lanceolate or linear. The leaves along the stem are similar in shape to those at the base, but shorter. Its flowers look like narrow bells, with colors ranging from blue to violet or pink, and as the name of the genus (Edraianthus) suggests, they seem to be “founded” on the rocks. They are arranged in small groups of (1-) 3-6 (-8) flowers, forming dense inflorescences. It flowers during the summer months and, specifically in Paggaio, it is in flower during June and July. It is found in rock crevices, cliffs and stony places, always in limestone. It can survive and complete its life cycle in the absence of competition in such species-deprived sites.

Although its distribution area Mount Paggaio is rather restricted, E. graminifolius is not threatened by anthropogenic or other factors.

Conservation status

Conservation state

It is not subjected to any national or international conservation status. In various countries, it is widely cultivated as an ornamental because of its wonderful flowers, reproduced by seeds from gardens. As it is not an ornamental species in Greece, horticulture does not pose a threat to its populations. In addition, it has been recorded in sites not associated with disturbances that could adversely affect local populations.
